How-To: Use Ekiga VoIP Client for Handling Your Gizmo SIP Account
Out of curiosity I wanted to see how easy it would be to setup Ekiga (installed by default on Ubuntu and many other Linux distros) to manage my Gizmo account/service. As it turns out, it’s quite easy. So, if you’re into using free/libre software over closed source software, this guide is for you.
Instructions:
1. Open Ekiga and go to Edit > Accounts
2. Now in the Account window click +Add
3. Enter the following settings into the Account Information pane:
Account Name: Gizmo
Registrar: proxy01.sipphone.com:5060
User: 1747169XXXX (your 11-digit SIP number — find it in Gizmo by clicking Account > My Profile)
Password: YOURPASSWORD
Authentication Login: 1747169XXXX (your 11-digit SIP number)
Registration Timeout: 3600

To make pc-to-phone calls, just enter the full phone number, including country and area code, and click connect (requires pre-paid minutes from SIPphone).

* Note: You can also buy SIP call-out minutes with Ekiga via Diamondcard.us

Thanks for the info … Probably saved me several minutes of farting about trying to get it set up.
Can you address the following question: If one purchases a “CallIn” number from sipphone.com (gizmo), how can one make the ekiga client ring when someone calls this number?
Making the CallOut go through sipphone/gizmo seems to work just dandy with Ekiga. I can’t get ekiga to recognize my CallIn number. I can’t find this specific info in the documentation. Advice?
thank you for this. very much helpful.
my environ:
v8.04 Ubuntu / ekiga 2.0.12
was able to test calling & the audio quality was very good!
thanks again

@Leigh - Yes, your Ekiga phone will ring when someone calls your “CallIn” phone number from Gizmo/SIPphone. Reason: it’s tied to your gizmo SIP number which you have Ekiga configured to use.
Hmmm…It turns out I had a “Basic775″ number through sipphone/Gizmo. Apparently those numbers had some kind of limitation which seemed to prohibit them from working with ATA boxes. I wonder if that’s why I could never get it to work with Ekiga. In any case, I dropped my Basic775 Gizmo/sipphone dial-in number and ended up going with another SIP provider for dial-in service. Ekiga is still my linux box client of choice. Thanks for this HowTo and forum.
Yeah… that’s probably the reason. I paid for an actual phone number from Gizmo/SIPphone for my area code and it works just fine. In fact, I use it in conjuction with GrandCentral for about 6 months now for free, out bound calls. Just use your address book in GrandCentral to place a call out and select your configured Gizmo line to receive the call once GrandCentral makes the connection [More Details — FYI, your Gizmo phone number will appear in your contact’s caller ID].
